Asking for my son.... because while we were changing his rear brakes (2005 Scion tC) we discovered both of his rear shocks had lost their lower retaining nuts. Since the shocks are retained by a horizontal bolt through a clevis arrangement, loss of the retaining nut was not immediately catastrophic , but one of the bolts had worked it’s way partially out of the clevis:

Once I had puzzled out the likely nut thread pattern and size, I ordered a couple and reinstalled them with the proper torque and some locktite (I know, locktite messes with measured torque values, but that’s not critical in this type of connection).

Careful inspection will note I purchased a spare (3 nuts in the bag). I can’t say enough good things about www.boltdepot.com for all your unusual hardware needs!

Which leaves me wondering how long the nuts have been missing... and why does the rear brake rotor have a wicked groove carved into it? rock stuck between rotor and dust shield ? No evidence left other than the groove (and it could have been that way from the previous owner, I only gave the brakes a cursory visual inspection when we bought the car, I didn’t pull the wheels or rotors, but I knew the rears were due for a change in ~10k ).

Oppo-pinions welcome, but we are back to having functional rear brakes and fully connected shocks, even if we did increase the vehicle gross weight by 0.01 lbs.

I bet money spend on new shocks would not be money wasted. Father/son bonding.

This is why the nuts on the shock bolts on all three of our vehicles are of the Nyloc variety.

Want to shed a few more grams? Grab a sawzall or cutoff wheel and lop off the end of that bolt!

Well done there. As far as the groove on the rotor, it might have been caused by a piece of brake pad material breaking off and gouging the rotor surface.

Bolt Depot is awesome.

That is all.
